Ways to Give

Hospice Volunteer Opportunities

Hospice care from VNSNY aims to provide compassionate and skilled care to patients and their families. To help us achieve this goal, the support of our volunteers is key. As a VNSNY Hospice volunteer, you can help serve patients and their families directly by:

  • Providing companionship in the home or nursing home
  • Calling newly admitted patients and making bereavement calls
  • Assisting with office activities in Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island
  • Contributing to the newsletter and helping organize events
  • Making holiday outreach calls to patients
  • Helping with fundraising
  • Helping patients and their families create a personal website as an online resource for family and friends
  • Giving haircuts, manicures, and massages

Volunteers are the heart of our hospice program. They provide that extra level of care and comfort that makes all the difference to patients and families. Volunteering is uniquely challenging and rewarding work. To visit with patients, potential volunteers must attend a twelve-hour training. We offer trainings on weeknights and weekends to accommodate a variety of schedules.

A phone interview and pre-registration are required and help prospective volunteers understand the requirements for volunteering for our end-of-life care program. To get started, check out the training schedule and contact your borough’s Volunteer Manager.
