Project Period: May 1999 to present

Background: The aging of the U.S. population presents new challenges for communities as they seek to support growing numbers of seniors who are aging in place. Prior to the creation of the AdvantAge Initiative, no tools existed to help communities systematically ascertain how well they support their elders.

Purpose: The AdvantAge Initiative works with ten communities around the country to help them measure and improve their “elder friendliness”ætheir capacity to support older residents who are aging in place. The initiative aims to help these communities promote the civic and social engagement of their seniors, sustain independence among those who are at risk for disease or disability, and better serve those who are frail, sick, or disabled.
