Your doctor may have told you that you are at risk for heart disease and to watch your cholesterol, but you may not be entirely sure what this means to your everyday life. Perhaps you have read articles warning about the dangers of trans fats but are not sure how seriously this can impact your health.
If you live in a Congregate Care setting, your VNSNY on-site nurse may conduct an educational series about a chronic disease, like diabetes, or give a talk on another health issue, such as:
VNSNY’s health workshops range in length from our four- to six-week series on cardiovascular health and diabetes education, to our one-hour presentations on food safety. We even offer informal “brown-bag” lunch sessions, such as the “Knowing your Medications” program—you can bring your medications to the workshop and the nurse will review them with you.
Your nurse will offer health workshops based on the needs of the community. If you and your neighbors let your nurse know what concerns you, she can tailor the programs to answer your questions.
VNSNY also offers health education programs as part of our Early Head Start program in Queens. Workshop topics include childbirth, breastfeeding, and child development, as well as literacy programs.
