We hold the highest respect for the brave individuals who have served our country. Since 2006, VNSNY Hospice Care has presented more than 100 Certificates of Merit to patients with military experience.
In December 2010, VNSNY Hospice Care became a proud participant in the We Honor Veterans program. Created by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, in collaboration with the Department of Veteran Affairs, the goal of this initiative is to "recognize the unique needs of America's veterans and their families", and to integrate clinical practices that will enhance end-of-life care.
Our staff has received special training to ensure that we're providing the best care possible to our veteran patients. The first step in this process is recognizing those with prior military service. Using a Military Check List, our staff screens every incoming patient to assess his or her veteran status. Once we've identified a patient as a veteran, we encourage that patient to share his or her story. Based on the information given during these information sessions, we can then recommend appropriate services related to issues such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
As a part of the We Honor Veterans program, we will also continue to hold recognition ceremonies, in which veterans can be presented with a Certificates of Merit in front of family and friends.
