TimeBanking Around the World
In 1987, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded five sites across the United States
to test the TimeBanking model in a variety of settings including health plans, hospitals
and senior centers. Since then, TimeBanks have cropped up all around the globe. The U.S.
and the U.K. have the greatest number of TimeBanks. Some are open to all in the community
and some are targeted to specific populations. For more information, see www.timebanks.org
and www.timebanks.co.uk.
Ana Miyares, VNSNY Community Connections TimeBank Manager, recently returned from Spain
where she is helping create their national network of TimeBanks. She also assisted leaders
in Chile and Japan in launching their TimeBank network. (Read more about Ana and the rest
of the VNSNY TimeBank Team.)
The largest TimeBanks in the United States are currently based in a settlement house in St.
Louis, across the state of Maine, and in multiple counties throughout Maryland.
Information about some of these sites can be obtained at http://www.timebanks.org/directory.htm.
The goal of the VNSNY TimeBank in NYC is to become the premier TimeBank for the greater NY
metropolitan area. Please contact us if you are interested in learning how we can work together
to achieve this goal.
