Rehabilitation Therapy

"My father recently suffered a stroke and is in a rehabilitation center. He will be coming home next week and I need to arrange care for him. Do you offer in-home occupational therapy?"

Our physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists work closely with patients recovering from orthopedic or cardiac surgery, injuries, neurological disorders, and many other types of health problems to help them achieve their maximum level of functioning. Our goal is to help patients and their families or caregivers return to as full and rich a life as possible. To that end, we are constantly seeking new and better ways to improve our care. Our innovative pre- and post-operative physical therapy program, for example, is specially designed to help orthopedic patients recover faster by starting their therapy before their surgery begins.

More than 500 therapists cover three major rehabilitation disciplines.
The Visiting Nurse Service of New York has more than 500 therapists covering three major rehabilitation disciplines: physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology. All of our rehabilitation therapists are state-licensed professionals. Many have also earned advanced degrees in their fields of specialization. Each therapist works with the patient's physician, home health care nurse, and other disciplines to ensure that comprehensive care is provided.

We have the expertise and capabilities to provide:

  • Physical Therapy: Through therapeutic exercise, balance activities and ambulation training, our physical therapists help patients regain functional mobility and gross motor skills.

  • Occupational Therapy: Using fine motor, cognitive, perceptual and sensory exercises and tasks, our occupational therapists help patients regain daily living skills.

  • Speech Language Pathology: Our speech language pathologists help patients regain their ability to produce and understand speech as well as facilitate communication skills. They also help patients manage swallowing disorders.

The benefits of in-home rehabilitation therapy
There are many benefits to providing high-quality rehabilitation in the comfort of a patient's own home, including:

  • The therapist can assess the patient's needs within the context of the patient's home.

  • The therapist can identify safety concerns and environmental barriers, determine if there's a need for adaptive equipment and therapeutic intervention, plus evaluate the patient's ability to function within his or her environment.

  • The patient's family members and friends can play an active and vital role in the patient's therapy, assisting with exercises and providing ongoing encouragement.

  • VNSNY can help facilitate a more rapid discharge from the hospital, decreasing the cost of health care in most cases.
Inpatient and home care rehabilitation plans can be integrated, providing a level of continuity that enhances the recovery process.
