“My son is 12 and has bad asthma. Last week he had to be rushed to the emergency room because he couldn't breathe. It was scary! What can we do to help avoid this from happening in the future?"
Treating Asthma in the Big Apple
A major health problem in New York City, asthma affects both children and adults. The Visiting Nurse Service of New York was one of the first organizations in the city to develop a comprehensive program of asthma treatments to help patients understand and manage their asthma. Our clinical nurse specialists have designed protocols and patient educational materials that are now standard in the care of asthma. By having our asthma nurses teach patients how to manage their symptoms, we have helped them avoid the trauma of emergency room visits and hospitalization.
Our asthma nurses help patients learn how to:
- Live with their asthma and become more capable in self-care
- Adhere to medication regimens
- Adopt changes in diet and lifestyle and improved capability in doing activities
This service is available to residents of:
- Bronx
- Brooklyn
- Manhattan
- Queens
- Staten Island
- Nassau County
- Westchester County
