VNSNY has a long tradition of serving the residents of the Bronx. We're also very much a part of the fabric of the Bronx community - of our 10,400 employees, over 2,300 live in the Bronx.
- In 2003, VNS served more than 21,400 patients in the Bronx.
- Many of our patients come from 8 hospitals in the Bronx where we have in-hospital coordinators who arrange for seamless transfers of inpatient care to home care. In addition, our patients are also referred to us by their physicians. In 2003, physicians referred over 2,700 patients directly to VNSNY.
- While over half of the patients we see in the Bronx are over 65 years old, the rest are young adults and children.
- The majority -- 65% -- of our Bronx patients are female.
- Our presence in the Bronx community is especially important because 35% of our adult patients live alone and 21% have no caretakers.
- In 2003, over 33% of our patients in the Bronx were Spanish speaking.
