Our Charitable Care Mission

If anything embodies the spirit of the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, it is our commitment to providing care to people in our community who are in need.

In 1893, charitable care meant providing free home health nursing to poor immigrants living in squalid conditions in crowded tenements on the Lower East Side. Today, home health care still comprises the bulk of charitable care we provide, but our ethic of caring and generosity has extended to each new program that VNSNY has created over the years.

In 2003, VNSNY provided $18.9 million in charitable care services, including care for 5,000 uninsured and underinsured New Yorkers who had nowhere else to turn. Last year VNSNY provided:

  • More than $11 million in charitable home health care services. Our services ranged from helping a frail senor learn to walk again after a hip operation, to teaching a patient with diabetes how to self-administer insulin, to helping a family manage with Alzheimer’s

  • Nearly $2 million in hospice care services, including medications, bereavement services, medical equipment and supportive and counseling services

  • More than $1 million in services to children and families, including asthma management, helping young fathers develop bonding parent/child relationships and respite care to relieve a parent caring for a chronically ill or disabled child

  • Free flu shots to 30,000 seniors in New York City

  • Over $645,000 in free medications, equipment, and support to low income patients with special health and social needs

  • $565,000 in care for HIV/AIDS patients and people with chronic mental illness

  • More than $200,000 in free health services and education in our community outreach centers in Chinatown and Queens, including services to undocumented immigrants. Activities included blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, instruction in nutrition, exercise and therpeutic relaxation techniques, counseling, and seminars on how to take medicine safely at home.

  • Over $60,000 in holiday gifts for frail and isolated patients

We are very grateful for your support. To make a donation, or if you’d like more information about making a donation, please use our online donation form or call us at 212-609-1567.
