State-of-the-Art Technology Used to Improve Patients' Speech
The Visiting Nurse Service of New York is pleased to announce our speech pathology telehealth services.
Telehealth is a service delivery model that uses state-of-the-art technology to deliver speech related clinical services. The technology includes a small video screen, camera and speakerphone, which is provided by VNSNY and placed in the patient's home at no cost to the patient. The connection is made when the VNSNY speech clinical specialist places a phone call to the patient, and within 60 seconds after pressing a button, the clinician and patient see and hear each other through the video screen and speakerphone. The 30 minute therapy session may include oral motor exercises to improve the range of motion and strengthen the lips, tongue and jaw; articulation drills to improve speech clarity; exercises for voice improvement including rate, loudness and pitch exercises; language stimulation activities; pre-feeding swallowing exercises;and/or review of home exercise plan with the patient/caregiver. Each therapy session is designed to meet the specific needs of the patient's speech-language or swallowing disorder.
The speech telehealth sessions are provided in conjunction with home visits by a speech language pathologist. This comprehensive care approach enhances clinical outcomes, improves patient compliance with the home speech program, and involves caregivers to assist in reaching outcomes in an active dynamic manner.
The speech telehealth program is now offered in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx with plans for roll out in Nassau and Queens in the near future. To date, nearly 30 patients with a wide variety of medical and speech related diagnoses have benefited from the program.
