National Volunteer Week: April 17 - 23
April 17 to 23rd is National Volunteer Week. Sponsored by the Points of Life Foundation, National Volunteer Week is about calling attention to, and thanking, one of America's most valuable assets: our volunteers.
Volunteers do so much to help improve our community. Here at the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, volunteers help with a wide range of activities, everything from research to assisting with community events, data entry and other clerical duties to translating materials, helping out with our toy drive, knitting sweaters and scarves for our patients (both young and old), telephone reassurance (to elderly homebound patients), fundraising, mailing out brochures, and making home visits to patients and family members within our Hospice program. We deeply appreciate each and every one of our volunteers for their generosity and support.
National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering. Since then, every U.S. president has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week.
This year, the theme is "Inspire By Example." It truly reflects the power volunteers have to inspire the people they help, as well as to inspire others to serve. We at VNSNY salute our own volunteers, all 635 of them, and those throughout the nation. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of our volunteers that provide inspiring examples and help our staff bring the caring home to over 100,000 patients annually.
