When measuring a person's heart health, blood pressure readings may be one of the most helpful indicators. A normal reading is anything 120/80 mm/Hg or lower. Essentially, these numbers refer to the ease with which your blood is able to travel through your arteries so it can distribute oxygen and nutrients from your heart to other parts of your body. High blood pressure, or hypertension, can put you at risk for heart disease, heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and vision problems. While there are some genetic factors, such as a family history of hypertension, that can increase your risk of developing hypertension, there are definitely measures you can take to help keep your BP numbers within the normal range.
