Interested in learning about LTC?
Home care is only one type of long-term care (LTC). LTC provides services to people who need help in their everyday activities, due to a chronic or disabling health condition. People of all ages need LTC, though just over half of those in need are over 65. LTC services can be delivered in a nursing home, assisted living facility or other congregate setting, or in a persons own home. When services are delivered in the home, they are called home care.
Currently, most Americans who need this support get help from family or friends, who provide services without being paid. Some people pay for supportive services out of pocket, but this can be expensive and services are often difficult to find. Government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid cover some services but have serious limitations. Families, researchers, and policy makers alike are interested in finding affordable ways to allow people to receive the support they need.
