Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Visiting Nurse Service of New York sponsoring the TimeBank?

Since 1893, VNSNY has been committed to improving the quality of life of New Yorkers and strengthening its neighborhoods. The TimeBank is consistent with VNSNY’s mission to support people in their homes and communities, and we are part of its Community Benefit Program. Membership is free and open to all!

How does the TimeBank work?

TimeBank members earn one time credit for every hour contributed which can be redeemed for an hour of service from any other member.

Am I allowed to be in debt in my TimeBank account?

Upon enrolling, members are encouraged to make a request right away. We are a bank that encourages debt and charges no interest. We know that members will contribute whatever they can.

Are TimeBank members screened?

All members attend an enrollment session, have their references checked and participate in a one-on-one interview with staff. A sex offender check is completed for all members and a DMV check is run on those who want to provide driving services. All members receive a photo I.D.

How do I request a service?

You may request a service by calling or emailing the TimeBank. You may also arrange an exchange at any of our TimeBank gatherings. While we can’t guarantee each request, we make every effort to fulfill your needs.

When and where do the exchanges take place?

Once a match is made, it is up to the members to arrange the exchange. Members meet at the time and place that is most convenient for them.

What if I'm not sure what I can offer the TimeBank or I’m concerned that I’m too busy to participate?

These are common reactions. The TimeBank works even for those with very busy schedules since members give only what they want, when they can. Once people look at the list of TimeBank services, they find simple ways to contribute that suit their lifestyles.

I already volunteer at one or more of the TimeBank’s partner organizations. Can I get credit?

You can receive up to ten time credits per month for each of the partner organizations where you volunteer. In order to receive your time credits, you must report your hours to the TimeBank staff by phone or email at the end of each month.
