VNSNY Hospice Care is the largest hospice program in the New York metropolitan area. On any given day, we care for close to 600 patients at the end of life. Our patients include those with illnesses such as cancer, congestive heart failure, emphysema, end-stage dementia and AIDS.
VNSNY Hospice Care patients and their families receive services from a team of professionals who have training and expertise in managing the symptoms of an illness and enhancing the quality of life — known as palliative care. Our staff includes eight full-time physicians (all board-certified in hospice and palliative care), nurses, social workers, bereavement counselors, and a multi-denominational staff of spiritual care counselors. Our other professionals include dietitians, home health aides, and therapists who specialize in complementary medicine. Our physicians, nurses, and counselors are available around the clock; we are the hospice that never sleeps.
In addition, the hospice team includes hospice volunteers, who visit patients and families and provide such specialized skills as bedside yoga, hand massage, haircuts, and facials, as well as bereavement support. Our “On Call” volunteers offer telephone reassurance, evening medication reminders, and “tuck in” phone calls before bedtime. They speak German, Spanish, and Russian, as well as English.
